You feel something is off. Maybe you've been performing great at work, and yet you stay awake at night wondering if you're in the right place, if you're becoming the right person, if made the right choice with your career path. Maybe you've been told you're talented, but you struggle to believe it. Maybe you're managing a team, trying to find your place in a male-dominated environment, or building something meaningful, and you're doing it mostly alone, without anyone to think things through with who really gets it.
That feeling that something needs to shift, is often what brings women to coaching. And if you've been curious but haven't taken the step yet, this article is for you. Here is what you can actually expect when you sit down for your first session.

Your First Coaching Session Is Not a Job Interview or a Therapy Assessment
One of the most common misconceptions about starting with a life coach, especially for women in tech or leadership who are used to goal-setting, performance reviews, and structured processes, is that the first session will feel like an assessment. That you'll need to arrive with a clear problem, a defined goal, and a sense of what you want to achieve by session six.
You don't.
The first session is a conversation, not a commitment. It is a space where you get to show up exactly as you are, with as much or as little clarity as you currently have. You might come in knowing precisely what you want to work on. Or you might arrive with nothing more than a feeling that something in your career or your life is no longer working, and that is a completely valid and useful place to begin.
As an English speaking life coach in Berlin working with women across Europe, I designed the first session to be exactly that: a real conversation. A chance for both of us to see what it might be like to work together.
What We Actually Do in the First 30 Minutes
The first session with me is a free 30-minute Discovery Session. It is non-binding, which means there is no pressure and no expectation that you will sign up for anything.
In those 30 minutes, we do a few things. I will ask you about where you are right now, what feels heavy, what feels stuck, what you are hoping for. I want to understand not just the situation on paper but how you are experiencing it from the inside. I want to hear what you have already tried, what kind of support you have around you, and what has brought you here now rather than six months ago or a year from now.
I will also tell you about how I work and what coaching with me looks like in practice, so you can get a real sense of whether my approach resonates with you.
Because I believe that choosing a coach is a very personal decision. In theory, a skilled coach can work with many different people. But coaching works through relationship, and that relationship needs to feel right before anything meaningful can happen. The first session is how we find out whether it does.
What You Can Expect to Feel Afterward
After a first session, most women tell me they feel a sense of relief and excitement.
The relief comes from having said things out loud that they have been carrying with them for a long time, sometimes things they have not said to their partner, their friends, or their colleagues, because those conversations come with complicated dynamics. The session is a rare space where you can be fully honest without managing anyone else's reaction.
The sense of excitement comes from the experience of someone listening without an agenda, reflecting back what they hear, and helping you find language for things that have been shapeless up until now. One of my clients told me, that making sense out of the mess in her hear gave her hope that a lot is possible.
Working with women in leadership and tech across the world, I notice that most of them are high-functioning, high-achieving, and deeply capable of managing everything externally. What they are often missing is a space that is just for them, where the conversation is not about output or performance but about who they are and who they want to become.
How to Know If Coaching Is Right for You Right Now
Coaching is not therapy, and it is not consulting. It works best when you are ready to look honestly at where you are, take responsibility for the direction you want to move in, and engage actively in the process between sessions, not just during them.
If you are in the middle of an acute mental health crisis, therapy is the more appropriate support. But if you are functioning, if you are capable and ambitious, but something feels off, whether it is about confidence, identity, career direction, belonging, or simply the feeling that you are living someone else's version of your life, coaching can meet you there.
You do not need to be broken to come to coaching. You need to be ready to take yourself seriously.
